Carina Norrgård

What is your current job?

I work as the Sales Logistician for Sweden, which means that my main focus is on Sales and Logistics. My work is concentrated in Sweden with the main purpose of optimising our supply chain from the depot to our customers, in order to create the most optimal conditions for our stores. I am also involved in DC and Corporate level projects which will influence the way our Swedish stores do business.

What have you worked with previously at Clas?

I’ve worked at Clas since 2003 starting out in the Bäckebols store in Gothenburg. My plan was to just work for a year and then resign and become a student. The problem was that I liked it too much at Clas to leave it completely, so I went down to part-time and studied at uni at the same time. I went on to become the store’s Campaign Manager too.

What’s your educational background?

I’ve studied 5 years at Chalmers University of Technology for a Civil Engineering Degree. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s in Supply Chain Management.

How has the company used your professional skills?

I’m restless by nature and always looking for new challenges. When I was working in the store I always wanted to expand my sales role to include other responsibilities. I think that’s why my Store Manager made me in charge of stock management and gave me the Store Campaign job. During the summers I would help with sales drives and since my Store Manager and Team Leader trusted me with these responsibilities, it has also allowed me to develop. Many of my fellow job colleagues have also encouraged me to apply for higher positions, something which has also helped me be in the position that I find myself today.

Finally, what is the best thing that has happened to you during your time here?

Being able to have the opportunity to develop from an ordinary Sales Assistant to working full-time with the thing I find the most enjoyable, namely Sales and Logistics.

Peter Bäckman

What is your current job?

My current job is as Store Manager for the Bromma store since its grand opening in 2010. I work with a great group of people and it makes work fun and our customers feel it too. We put on quite a show!

What’s your educational background?

I’ve only upper secondary school education in social sciences majoring in economics. I wasn’t the best of students. I guess I was more interested in working and making money. It’s easy to be smart after the fact about studying more, but I do know one thing. Anything is possible if you want it bad enough. Perform, keep your ears open and learn whatever you can get your hands on. Everything that I’ve learned from my time at the store is thanks to all the people who I’ve worked here with since starting out at Clas. I have to give most credit to my former Store Manager, Mikael Haag.

Can you say something about your career path within the company?

I started out as a Sales Assistant in the Solna store in 2005, and I already knew back then that I wanted to assume greater responsibilities. After the first year I was given my first “on-call” shift on nights and weekends. My former Team Leader thought that I was motivated and made me assume greater responsibilities. At that point I made it my goal to become a Store Manager. In 2006 I became Team Leader and in the beginning of 2010 I had the opportunity to become Deputy Store Manager, before finally applying for the position I currently hold at Bromma.

How has the company used your professional skills?

I have always been able to go on training courses whenever I wanted and Clas Ohlson has a wide variety of courses ranging from Worker’s Right to other practical business courses at the Head Office. It says a lot about a company that believes enough in their staff to invest so heavily in them like Clas Ohlson does. It’s very inspiring that they seem to believe in staff and are willing to invest in them too.

Finally, how do you see your future within the company?

Right now I’m concentrating on the store and my Store Manager role, making sure I continue to develop along with my staff. I try to continuously evaluate my performance and set up new goals for myself. As long as the company believes and invests in me I see no reason for not continuing in my professional development. This company, in my opinion, is very good at recognising and developing their staff. That’s why I think that there is a great synergy between me and the company and what we have to give to each other. It’s really only me who stands in the way of my professional development. As they say “Don’t limit your challenges! Challenge your limits”!

Sandra Salama takes the North Sea plunge.

Sandra Salama made an exciting and tumultuous career move, when she switched from her usual workplace at our Uddevalla store, to our newly opened UK store in Croydon on the outskirts of London.

- When I was asked if I wanted the role of "Administration Controller", I had no idea that I would enjoy working with invoice and salary administration, but I really loved it. I was even involved in coaching some of my colleagues in our other newly opened UK stores and our Västra Förlunda store in Sweden in getting started with our new till system.

Clas Ohlson has really invested in me.

Sandra was also involved in the recruiting process of new store staff. She has currently advanced to a new position in our UK Head Office in Kingston, where she works with both administration and HR issues.

- It’s both fun and difficult at the same time. We try to find people that fit our unique culture, friendly attitude and spirit, which are the hallmarks of the Clas Ohlson company.  Overall, I’m really chuffed about my UK experience.

In the beginning Sandra took work leave from her Uddevalla store, but now she is in England to stay!

- I feel that my employer has really invested in me. I’m so happy to be given the opportunity to come here. It’s a great feeling to be a part of building up an entirely new branch of the company.

Look how far we’ve come..  Nobody even knew who we were when we first arrived. That the English have discovered Clas Ohlson and love our concept is no surprise to Sandra.

- They love our products, and more and more are finding their way to our stores. Having everything under one roof really impresses them.

Sandra doesn’t regret leaving her everyday life and security back in Uddevalla.

- Absolutely not. You’ve got to try new things. I’m going to be here for awhile – how long, I don't know yet, but I want to continue on this journey that Clas Ohlson is set out for me here in the UK.
