Sustainability case studies
Clas Ohlson’s business concept is to make it easy for people to solve their everyday practical problems. Through a sustainable business concept and operation, Clas Ohlson aims to create value for its shareholders, customers and employees, as well as for society as a whole.
We shall commit the company’s resources to economic, social and environmental development that contributes to sustainable living conditions for current and future generations.
Clas Ohlson’s sustainability programmes are led by the CSR forum, which consists of the CEO, Director of Information, Director of Purchasing, Director of Supply Chain, Director of HR, Environmental Coordinator, Internal Controller and the CSR Manager (Code of Conduct). The CSR forum sets goals, strategies and activities for the entire Group’s CSR programmes and monitors progress towards established objectives. Clas Ohlson’s CSR work permeates the entire organisation and its various operations, down to each individual employee.
CSR has always played a central role in our business strategy, but the CSR perspective was fully integrated into Clas Ohlson’s strategy and business planning during 2010/11, and is now included in our processes, tools and plans.
Clas Ohlson’s key stakeholders are customers, employees, shareholders, suppliers and manufacturers, as well as the general public. We are in continuous dialogue with our stakeholders to ensure that we keep abreast of the various expectations and demands placed on the company. We consult with a number of asset management companies and their sustainability analysts concerning the various CSR challenges and opportunities facing Clas Ohlson. Several of these analysts have also been on factory visits to monitor the methods we use to inspect and verify our manufacturers in Asia. During 2010/11 we have engaged with sustainability consultants on the various CSR issues, opportunities and challenges facing Clas Ohlson and have held meetings with Amnesty International, Swedwatch and Save the Children to learn from their experience and expertise on human rights.
Clas Ohlson conducts an extensive customer survey each year in Sweden, Norway and Finland. The 2010/11 survey included questions related to customers’ views on sustainability and the areas they consider being of greatest importance. The survey highlighted that customers believe that our social work is most important, followed by a good personal policy, our environmental programmes and our community involvement.
Clas Ohlson has established a strategy to cooperate with NGOs (Non Governmental Organisations), which has led to a joint venture with Save the Children in Sweden, Norway and China with an ambition for future cooperation in Finland and the UK. Clas Ohlson has also cooperated with the Swedish Cancer Society during the financial year and participated in two campaigns against breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Clas Ohlson is a signatory to the UN Global Compact, which is a policy initiative to promote human rights. Since 2008 we have also reported our direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
Clas Ohlson cooperates with local municipalities when developing new stores. There is a shared interest in creating a vibrant local business community, particularly in the city centre locations where Clas Ohlson primarily establishes its stores. Central locations ensure that people are able to shop during their workdays and reduce the need for car journeys to out of town shopping centres. We open a large number of new stores in our current four markets each year, which creates new job opportunities and contributes toward public finances.
Clas Ohlson reported in accordance with the latest GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) guidelines in 2010/11 and opted to report at level C (not reviewed by an external party). The information and performance indicators provided in the Sustainability Report are selected on the basis of significance and relevance from a sustainability perspective for Clas Ohlson and according to requests from our stakeholders. A cross-reference table illustrating how Clas Ohlson’s sustainability reporting meets the various GRI indicators can be found in the 2010/11 Sustainability Report.
