Sustainability case studies
Clas Ohlson’s employees are the core of the Clas Ohlson brand. As Clas Ohlson continues to expand, we place great emphasis on attracting and retaining the industry’s best employees that are capable of providing a high level of customer service. Key success criteria include our strong corporate culture, diversity programmes, continuous skill development, competitive salaries and preventative healthcare initiatives.
The Clas Ohlson spirit is encompassed in four corporate values, which are fundamental to our sustainability and CSR activities as they guide our conduct with co-workers, customers and suppliers. The values of drive, warmth, commitment and innovation have recently been revised and adapted for use in all countries where Clas Ohlson is present.
In spring 2011, Clas Ohlson conducted its second Group-wide employee survey, which was completed by 84 percent of employees. The survey has provided a solid platform on which we can develop our strategy for how to attract, reward and motivate staff and how we should design leadership action plans. The Group has an Employee Satisfaction Index of 74 percent, which compares favourably with other companies. Other results from the survey highlight that the majority of employees are proud to work for Clas Ohlson and generally have confidence in managers, and feel that they can influence decision-making. The company’s efforts to promote diversity and equality are also highly valued. Our future challenge is to maintain Clas Ohlson’s position as an attractive employer as we expand by focusing on our corporate values, leadership and providing clear feedback on employees’ performance and salary.
We believe that good results, job satisfaction, commitment and teamwork can be achieved through employee diversity. We consequently strive for an even distribution of staff with various experiences and backgrounds. No one shall be discriminated against on the grounds of his or her gender, age, religion or belief, sexual preference, or ethnic and national background. The Group’s gender equality policy, for example, has the objective that neither gender shall account for less than 40 percent in any of the occupational categories, which is achieved through competence development and prioritisation during recruitment. Women accounted for 42 percent of Group employees during 2010/11 (41 percent in 2009/10), and the proportion of women among senior management in the Group increased from 13 percent to 20 percent following a reorganisation in May 2011.
Motivated and skilled employees form the basis for our continued expansion and success. The Group’s collective training requirements are reviewed ahead of each financial year and the Clas Ohlson Academy in Insjön is responsible for all mandatory and voluntary training programmes. Training aims to safeguard employees’ skills and the company’s future development. During 2010/11, around 2,000 employees underwent some form of training and each employee received an average of 14 hours of training throughout the year. Training is provided in either classrooms or via video conferencing.
Clas Ohlson’s salary policy requires that salaries are competitive, and match or surpass those of other companies in the industry when the company achieves its goals. In addition to a fixed salary, employees have some form of performance-based salary as well as staff discounts.
Clas Ohlson aims to provide a good work environment where employees feel a sense of satisfaction, security and solidarity, as well as physical and mental wellbeing. The good quality working environment and job satisfaction experienced by Clas Ohlson employees was highlighted in the recent employee survey and is demonstrated by low staff turnover and low levels of sickness relative to the industry in general. Total sick leave in 2010/11 was 3.9 percent.
